There are a number of sex addiction treatment programs available. Tulane University’s program in New Orleans, Sierra Tucson in Arizona, and the Menninger Clinic’s program in Topeka are the best-known programs in the United States.
The same strategies that have proven effective in treating chemical dependency are adopted in these programs. Many chemical dependency programs offer a sexual addiction program or component since sex addiction is more common among substance abusers.
You should ask yourself the following questions when in search of a good sex addiction treatment program:
- Is the basis of the program stand on a 12-step philosophy, and during the treatment, are there appropriate 12-step meetings to attend?
- What are the groups that address sexual addiction and compulsiveness?
- For sexual compulsiveness and addiction, what is the experience of staff in facilitating the groups or program?
- What percentage of the therapy program will be focused on these issues?
Additionally, a treatment program should contain the following components:
- Education about sexual compulsiveness and addiction that corrects misconceptions about this highly misunderstood set of behaviors
- Perhaps one of the most important, if not the important most component, components is a disclosure process that must be facilitated by well trained staff that make appropriate decisions about which family member need to hear what information about the behaviors and the specific symptoms by understanding the vulnerability of each family member.
- Time to debrief information that the patient discloses during treatment to the family members or spouses to receive their support as well for a successful treatment.
